What is Power BI, and How Can Managers Use It to Influence Positive Change?

Helping Future Leaders Transform Data into Stories, Decisions and Organisational Impact

Power BI Isn't Just a Reporting Tool—It's a Leadership Tool

In February, I had the pleasure of delivering a three-hour interactive keynote to ALJ's emerging manager cohort, in partnership with Emeritus and INPD. The session explored a question that many organisations are now asking.

How can managers use data not simply to measure performance, but to create meaningful organisational change?

Whilst Power BI is often introduced as a dashboarding and reporting platform, this keynote deliberately took a different perspective. Rather than beginning with the technology, we began with leadership.

The central message of the session was simple: Technology doesn't create better organisations. Better leaders using technology do.

Beyond Dashboards

Many organisations invest heavily in business intelligence platforms, yet too often they become repositories of charts, graphs and reports that are viewed once before being forgotten.

The keynote challenged delegates to think differently.

Power BI should not be viewed as a reporting destination.

It should become the starting point for conversations, curiosity and better decision-making.

Throughout the session, we explored how managers can use data visualisation to identify patterns, communicate insight more effectively, encourage collaboration and ultimately influence positive behavioural change across their teams.

Rather than asking, "What does this dashboard show?", participants were encouraged to ask, "What conversation should this dashboard start?"

From Data to Storytelling

One of the strongest themes emerging from the workshop was the power of storytelling.

Great leaders rarely persuade through spreadsheets alone.

They inspire action by combining evidence with narrative, context and purpose.

The discussion demonstrated how Power BI can become an incredibly powerful communication tool when used to explain performance, identify opportunities and create shared understanding across teams.

One delegate reflected:

"The perspective of the Power BI is not a reporting tool, it's an amplifier for leadership. It's a very powerful sentence and I think about it from now on."

Another participant added:

"To be honest, I created dashboards with Power BI earlier, but with this concept I believe it's more helpful for me for storytelling."

These comments perfectly captured one of the keynote's core objectives—moving beyond reporting and towards leadership influence.

Unlocking Innovation Through Better Questions

Another major focus of the session was helping managers recognise that data should stimulate curiosity rather than provide all the answers.

By learning to visualise operational information differently, participants began identifying opportunities for improvement within their own functions almost immediately.

The energy in the room became increasingly collaborative as ideas flowed between delegates.

As one participant enthusiastically shared:

"You don't know how many ideas that came to my mind after this two hours session."

Another simply added:

"So many ideas came to my mind."

Moments like these demonstrate that the real value of business intelligence lies not within the software itself, but within the conversations and innovation it enables.

Making Business Intelligence Accessible

One of the most encouraging aspects of the keynote was seeing participants with very different levels of experience engage equally with the concepts.

For some, this was their first introduction to Power BI.

One delegate openly commented:

"This was my first time ever I heard about this app, the Power BI. I never used it... I didn't know this thing exists, to be honest."

By focusing on leadership principles rather than technical functionality, the session created an environment where everyone could contribute, regardless of previous experience.

Technology became accessible because it was framed around solving real business problems rather than learning software features.

Turning Insight into Organisational Performance

The keynote concluded by exploring practical operational applications across supply chains, warehousing, customer service and commercial performance.

Participants discussed how clear visualisation enables managers to identify trends more quickly, prioritise resources more effectively and make faster, more confident decisions.

One delegate summarised this perfectly:

"If we visualise the data clearly, it enables faster decisions, better prioritisation and more confident business actions."

Another immediately recognised a practical operational application:

"If we manage to collect this data and have one dashboard, it will be easier to spot which warehouses have dead space."

These reflections demonstrated exactly what the session was designed to achieve—helping managers translate data into meaningful organisational action.

Leadership Amplified

Perhaps the most rewarding feedback came at the end of the keynote when delegates reflected on the overall experience.

One participant smiled and said:

"Actually, when I'm facing a problem that I only find five stars, there is nothing because I need to vote more."

Feedback like this is always deeply appreciated, but more importantly, it reflects something far more valuable than satisfaction.

It reflects a shift in thinking.

The objective was never simply to teach Power BI.

It was to help future leaders understand how business intelligence can become a catalyst for curiosity, innovation, collaboration and better decision-making.

Because whilst dashboards may display information...Leadership is what transforms information into meaningful change.

"Power BI is not a reporting tool. It is an amplifier for leadership—helping managers turn information into insight, insight into conversations, and conversations into organisational change."
