The Importance of Leadership, Inclusion and Team Culture Within Sport

With the Euros 2020 coming to its climax, we have all watched teams from all over Europe compete to win. In order for a team to work well together to win, time and effort needs to be invested and the importance of a strong working team culture not only creates a team, but it makes a team.

We recently read an article by the BBC about the fostering of a culture of inclusion in the England camp and how this has been developed by their manager Gareth Southgate. This article highlighted Southgate’s approach to management and culture within the team and how this has restored faith in the team, on and off the pitch. Each and every team member feels listened to, appreciated and valued.

“From the beginning, reshaping the culture within the squad and his staff was a priority. In his four and a half years in the role, Southgate has drawn influences and inspiration on matters of team-building, sustainable success and man-management best practices from a wide range of sources.”

Danny Welbeck speaking of the England manager Gareth Southgate.

The leader of any team is the glue holding the important components together, guiding and encouraging each individual to succeed. Poor leadership creates cracks which can develop overtime. Investing in the culture of the team whether it’s a sport teams or a team within a private or public sector organisation is vital to a business and its success.

“Not only does Southgate believe in the importance of implementing a strong working culture, it is the central tenet of his management style.”

Danny Welbeck speaking of the England manager Gareth Southgate.

It is essential to create an environment where each member of the team feels relaxed and able to be themselves and allows them to feel like a vital part of their organisation and its culture.
